When you experience slow drain in one of your sinks in your house, you might think of using chemical drain cleaners than hiring a plumbing company. Your main motive is to save some money. After all, you think that using drain cleaner is easy, and in some cases, can easily take care of minor drain clogs.
However, with chemical drain cleaners you should take precautions when using them for cleaning your pipes. All this is never conveyed to you in the TV commercials that you see every other day-otherwise, you would end up not only your skin, but your pipes as well! Why you Should Avoid Chemical Drain Cleaners
When using a chemical based drain cleaner, you need to take some precautions to protect yourself as well as your plumbing system. Let’s have a close look at few of them. Avoid the Seriously Harmful Chemicals
When dealing with chemicals for clearing your plumbing system, you should avoid really harsh ones that may carry serious risks. Unfortunately, it is quite hard to determine which of these chemicals are mild, or which of these are harsh. When you are choosing a drain cleaner, you should avoid the ones with lye or acid. These are very strong chemicals, and can damage your septic and waste water system, PVC pipes, and you may also end up with burns on your skin.
If a stage comes that you have no other option but to use such harsh chemical based drain cleaners for clearing your drains, you should preferably hire a plumber. However, if you still want to do it yourself, you should take considerable precautions! Always wear safety goggles, and protective gloves, and make sure the room you would be using the chemicals in is properly ventilated. When these drain cleaners are not required, you should store them at some safe place because they can be fatal for your kids and pets. The best place to store them is a locked closet or some high shelf.
For mild clogs in your drains, you can use much safer alternatives such as bleach, baking soda, and vinegar. They may not be able to clean your entire plumbing system, but may work to some extent, and may give some results if used on consistent basis, but they may be effective only for minor clogs. On the other hand, long lasting, and safe way to clear your clogged drains is by hiring a good plumbing company in your area. Read the Labels Carefully!
As we discussed before, many harsh chemicals are used in these drain cleaners, and they will not only burn your skin, but can also damage your pipes and septic system as well. You should read labels before buying them, and you should also know what to do when you accidentally ingest or spill these chemicals during your drain clearing project. Don’t Mix those Chemicals When you mix various chemicals, they usually react. In some cases, these reactions can be as simple as color changes, but few of them may end up in violent explosions! Most of the time chemical drain cleaners have the latter effect, and release toxic gases or fumes , and may even erupt as a big volcano of chemicals. This not only poses a danger to you as well as other family members and pets, but will also make it impossible for any plumbing company to clean your drains manually in the future. In fact, in worst cases of damage, you may have to pay thousands of dollars to a plumbing company to set the things right again.
